The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at fostering environmental stewardship and promoting sustainable waste management practices among residents in selected districts of Eastern Uganda.

Dubbed 'Yonja Uganda,' the campaign targets the districts of Buikwe, Mbale, and Tororo, with a specific focus on raising awareness about the detrimental effects of littering and the importance of proper waste disposal.

The primary objective of the 'Yonja Uganda' campaign is to sensitize and engage the public in adopting and implementing sustainable waste management strategies.

It will also involve conducting spot checks on public passenger vehicles to ensure compliance with waste disposal regulations, including the presence of waste bins.

Addressing the community in Mbale City Northern Division, NEMA Executive Director, Mr. Akankwasah Barirega, emphasized the critical role of cleanliness in attracting tourists and fostering a healthy environment.

He stated, "Tourists will not want to visit your city if it is dirty," noting the importance of collective efforts in maintaining cleanliness and preserving natural habitats.

As part of the three-day 'Yonja Uganda' campaign, NEMA representatives conducted sensitization sessions with vendors at the Namawojjolo Roadside Market in Mbale.

NEMA's Head of Communications, Naomi Karekaho said the healthy talk session at Namawojjolo aimed at educating vendors on proper waste management practices and the significance of maintaining a clean environment.

She also emphasized the importance of proper waste management to minimize its negative environmental impact and promote sustainable practices.
