Gen. Kainerugaba Urges Troops to Make Positive Impact as UPDF Transitions Leadership

During a handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya – Kampala, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba emphasized the importance of leaving a positive and lasting impact on the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).

Speaking to service commanders, chiefs, general and senior officers, Gen. Kainerugaba underscored the significance of upholding professionalism and peaceful culture within the military.

The ceremony witnessed the formal handover of responsibilities, with outgoing Deputy CDF (D/CDF) Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu passing the baton to Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding.

Similarly, Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda, the former Chief of Joint Staff (CJS), handed over to Maj. Gen. Jack Bakasumba.

Gen. Kainerugaba stressed that such transitions are integral for enhancing operational efficiency within the UPDF, reminding all troops that these offices are not permanent and serve as opportunities for all to contribute towards building a professional force.

Addressing the incoming and outgoing office bearers, Gen. Kainerugaba urged a continued spirit of togetherness, brotherhood, and sisterhood within the UPDF, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the force's positive reputation.

He expressed his satisfaction with the appointments made by the Commander in Chief of the UPDF, H.E Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, noting the significance of selecting the right individuals for key leadership roles.

In his acceptance speech, incoming D/CDF Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding commended his predecessor and pledged to serve to the best of his ability, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving the UPDF's goals.

Similarly, incoming CJS Maj. Gen. Jack Bakasumba reiterated his commitment to upholding discipline and ideological clarity within the force, promising zero tolerance for corruption.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including MODVA Under Secretary in Charge of Finance & Administration Mrs. Edith Buturo, Under Secretary Logistics Mr. Ngabirano Francis Kahiriita, and Under Secretary UPDF – Air Force Mr. James Mutabazi.

Also present were General Officer Commanding Reserve Force Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awanyi, Managing Director NEC Lt. Gen. James Mugira, and Commander Special Forces Command Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, among other generals and senior officers.
