In his nation address on the 18th June 2021, President Yoweri Museveni directed the Prime Minister and the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development to undertake a cash transfer program for private school teachers across the nation.

As per the President’s directive, teachers who depend on daily income especially in urban areas and were negatively impacted by the lockdown will be supported.

The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Hon. Betty Amongi while briefing the media at the Media Center in Kampala revealed that her Ministry has already implemented the Cash Transfer program and so far a total of 497,848 persons within the targeted areas have been reached.

While shading light on the eligibility criteria, the Minister said the beneficiaries must not be on the government payroll, in addition to being practicing teachers, they should be registered or licensed by the Education and Sports Ministry and have been  active before the beginning of the Covid19 lockdown in March 2020.

This program that aims at targeting private teachers in primary and secondary schools, will also not benefit those that received the Uganda Government Covid19 cash relief and those whose mobile money accounts are not registered in their names.

Hon. Amongi also emphasized that a total of 300,000 teachers across the country that fit in that eligibility are to gain in this program and each teacher is expected to receive UGX100,000 net with taxes and withdrawal fees catered for by the Ministry.

The Minister finally hinted on their approach of coordinating with Chief Administrative Officers, Town Clerks of cities and Municipalities plus KCCA to ensure that Head teachers compile and upload data of eligible teachers on the online system.
