Mufti Mubaje Urges Married Couples to Share Phone Passwords to Strengthen Trust in Marriages

His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, has advised Muslim married couples to share their phone passwords as a way to build trust and compassion in their relationships.

The Mufti delivered this advice during his speech at the wedding of Sheikh Imran Ssali, the UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs, held on Sunday, September 1st, 2024, at the residence of Sheikh Hussein Sengendo, the bride's father, in Buziga, Makindye Division, Kampala City.

Mufti Mubaje emphasized the importance of transparency in marriage, especially in today's digital age where smartphones are a common source of disputes among couples.

He humorously suggested that while men who are married to more than one wife should keep their phone passwords to themselves, the wives could share theirs to avoid misunderstandings, a comment that drew laughter from the audience.

Quoting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him), Mufti Mubaje reminded the guests that "Marriage is one of my traditions. So whoever rejects it is not part of me."

He encouraged the gathering to embrace marriage as a means of leading a righteous life, contrasting it with what he described as the "worldly alternatives promoted by Western cultures," which he claimed are contrary to Islamic values and lead to both health and psychological issues. He cited homosexual acts as an example of such alternatives.

The Mufti commended Sheikh Imran Ssali for his service and commitment to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), highlighting his journey from being a recipient of the UMSC scholarship to studying Islamic theology in Sudan, and later serving in various roles within the Council.

"We have not faulted him in any way since he started serving in different positions at the Council," Mufti Mubaje noted.

Addressing the newlyweds, Sheikh Imran Ssali and his bride, Ms. Nassanga Zaituni, a teacher by profession, Mufti Mubaje blessed their union and urged them to be exemplary in their marriage, given their strong religious backgrounds.

Mubaje expressed concern over the conduct of some Sheikhs who misuse social media to spread hate speech and insults against others, including people of different faiths.

He called on them to cease such behavior and urged the Muslim community to support the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) in its various transformation programs.

Before Mufti Mubaje’s speech, His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti, and Prof. Dr. Badru Kiggundu, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, also addressed the gathering, sharing their wisdom and blessings.

The wedding was attended by a distinguished audience, including members of the UMSC National Executive, General Assembly, and National Management Committee, led by Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Finance and Administration, Sheikh Twaha Uthuman, Mufti's Special Envoy to the Republic of South Sudan, Sheikh Salim Bbosa, Deputy Director of Sharia, Regional Assistants to the Mufti, District Kadhis, and County Sheikhs, among others.
