European Unions wants government to provide an independent investigation into the November 2020 riots that claimed upto 54 people.

As Uganda marks one year since these November 2020 riots that claimed lives of upto 54 people.

The riots erupted after presidential candidate Robert was arrested in Lila district as he campaigned.

The EU in Uganda delegation has now called for a full and independent investigation into the events of the 18th and 19th November 2020 as a key component of securing accountability for perpetrators and justice for victims of these killings.

European Union together with other diplomatic missions to Uganda of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and Norway now want a report on the police investigations into the killings to be made available to the public, in line with President Museveni address to the nation on the 14th of August 2021.

While addressing the nation Museveni extended condolences to all those who died in the riots and said government would compensate  those whose  families died in the riots yet weren’t rioting. He said Government would soon make the report available to the public

On the 26th of November 2020, the Delegation of the European Union to Uganda issued this statement together with the diplomatic missions to Uganda of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden as well as Iceland and Norway seeking accountability.
