Outgoing IGP, Okoth-Ochola Bids Farewell
Outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP) J.M. Okoth-Ochola delivered a heartfelt handover speech, reflecting on his illustrious 36-year service record and six-year tenure as the nation's top law enforcement officer.
Having commenced his journey in the force on January 2, 1988 Okoth-Ochola ascended through various distinguished roles before assuming the position of Inspector General of Police in 2018.
Among other roles, he served in capacities as a Deputy IGP, Director Special Duties, Director CID, Deputy Director CID, Commissioner Legal Department, Head complaints desk, Head Prosecution and OC Entebbe Aviation Security.
Addressing a gathering, including high-ranking government officials, current and retired police officers, and representatives from partner agencies, Mr. Okoth-Ochola expressed gratitude to His Excellency the President of Uganda for the honor of leadership bestowed upon him.
"When I took over the steering of affairs of this great Institution at about this time exactly 6 years ago, the task was clear – Professionalizing and Rebuilding the image of the Institution."
"Anchoring on teamwork, support and guidance from the President and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, we were able to register numerous achievements in policing as well as creating a general atmosphere of calmness, togetherness and a sense of belonging we are witnessing today." He added.
He acknowledged the unwavering support and guidance received from the President in steering the force towards a safer and more secure Uganda.
In his speech, he acknowledged the challenges that persist within the institution and outlined unfinished tasks that require continued attention and resolution by the incoming administration.
"Not all Institutional challenges could be solved in the six years of my tenure. Therefore, there are other unfinished critical issues that hinder professional policing which the new administration can accomplish. Some are outlined in this handover report."
He expressed confidence in the capabilities of his successor and the incoming leadership team. He extended his best wishes for their success in further advancing the Uganda Police Force as a beacon of excellence and a force for positive change.
