Just in: U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Speaker Among, Husband Magogo & Other Officials for Corruption and Human Rights Abuses
The United States Department of State has publicly designated five current and former Ugandan officials for their alleged involvement in significant corruption or gross violations of human rights.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has been designated due to her alleged involvement in significant corruption linked to her leadership of Uganda's Parliament.
Former Ministers Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, along with Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi, are designated for their roles in corruption related to the misuse of public resources, particularly in diverting materials from Uganda's most vulnerable communities for personal gain.
In addition, Peter Elwelu, former Deputy Chief of the Ugandan Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF), has been designated for his alleged involvement in gross violations of human rights, specifically in extrajudicial killings committed by UPDF forces under his command.
As a result of these designations, the individuals are generally ineligible for entry into the United States.
Furthermore, visa restrictions will be imposed on multiple other Ugandan officials for their role in undermining democratic processes and repressing marginalized or vulnerable populations in Uganda.
"The United States reaffirms its support for Ugandans advocating for democratic principles, inclusive governance, and accountability for those who engage in corruption and human rights abuses. Impunity for corrupt officials and human rights violators undermines development, fosters inequality, and restricts the enjoyment of human rights by all Ugandans." Part of the statement rad
The spouses of some designated officials have also been affected. Moses Magogo Hassim, husband of Anita Among; Michael George Kitutu, husband of Mary Goretti Kitutu; and Evelyne Nakimera, wife of Amos Lugolobi, have also been rendered ineligible for entry into the United States.
