In a significant development on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, Uganda marked its return to full membership status in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

This historic event unfolded during the 25th UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, a momentous gathering taking place from October 16 to October 20, 2023.

The reinstatement of Uganda's full membership was celebrated by a distinguished delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities. Leading the delegation was the Honorable Mugarra Martin Bahinduka, the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities.

The team also included key officials such as Mr. Kakula-Khirome Samuel, Undersecretary, Ambassador Amule Doreen, Ambassador Otiti Catherine from the Ugandan Embassy in France, Mr. Lyazi Vivian, Commissioner Tourism Development, and Ssali Gadafi, Senior Tourism Officer.

Uganda's return to the UNWTO fold comes in the wake of the country meeting its subscription obligations, signaling its commitment to actively engaging in the global tourism community. The reinstatement holds immense significance, providing Uganda with a renewed opportunity to leverage the benefits of UNWTO membership.

Hon. Mugarra expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the timely nature of Uganda's return. He emphasized that it positions the country to capitalize on the myriad opportunities offered by the organization's membership.

Uganda, now reinstated, is poised to actively participate in shaping global tourism policies and contributing to the direction of the industry on the international stage.

As the 25th UNWTO General Assembly continues its proceedings until October 20, 2023, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Uganda stands ready to play a vital role in the discussions that will shape the future of global tourism.
