UPDF Launches Arabic and Chinese Language Courses in Partnership with Makerere University
In a significant development for both the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the country at large, Major General James Birungi, Chief of Military Intelligence, inaugurated the languages wing at the School of Military Intelligence in Nakasongala district.
This initiative marks the official commencement of Arabic and Chinese language courses, conducted in collaboration with Makerere University School of Languages.
Major General Birungi commended the partnership with Makerere University, emphasizing its importance for the UPDF and the nation.
He underscored the timely nature of the courses in light of evolving global dynamics, highlighting the necessity for effective communication amidst diverse partnerships and technological advancements.
Addressing the participants, Major General Birungi urged them to approach the training with focus and a positive attitude, stressing its role in equipping them with essential skills such as interpretation, translation, and cultural expertise.
Colonel James Muhumuza, the Commandant of the School, outlined the course objectives, aiming to produce proficient linguists capable of reading, listening, writing, speaking, and translating effectively.
Drawing from historical context, Colonel Muhumuza referenced the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel, illustrating the power of language in both unifying and dividing communities.
Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe, Director of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University, expressed gratitude for the university's involvement in shaping the new language curriculum.
He emphasized the importance of diversifying language skills beyond English.
The event saw the presence of esteemed guests including Brigadier General Bonny Wolimbwa, Commandant of Kaweweta Recruit Training School, Brigadier General Tom Kabuye, Brigadier General Kenneth Shillingi, Asaba Charles, and Dr. Zhong Jianghua, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University, among others.
