Ngamba Island and Volcano Coffee Set New Standards for Ethical Hospitality in Uganda

Uganda’s cage-free movement is gaining momentum! Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary will feed all its chimpanzees 100?ge-free eggs by the end of this year, while both Ngamba Island and Volcano Coffee & Café have pledged to go fully cage-free in their restaurants by 2030. They join Golden Tulip, Rushaga Gorilla Camp, and Soola Chick Chicken Farm in driving a global shift toward ethical, sustainable hospitality that values both animals and consumers.

Ngamba Island and Volcano Coffee Set New Standards for Ethical Hospitality in Uganda

Uganda’s hospitality and food sector is taking important strides towards animal welfare and sustainability, with a growing number of hotels, restaurants, and farms adopting cage-free egg commitments. These efforts reflect a global shift in consumer expectations, where responsible sourcing and animal welfare are increasingly tied to sustainable tourism and ethical dining.

Leading the way in 2025 are Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Volcano Coffee , both of which have formally committed to sourcing eggs exclusively from cage-free systems. Their pledges mark a significant milestone for Uganda, demonstrating how hospitality providers can extend their sustainability practices beyond conservation and eco-tourism to include the welfare of farmed animals.

“These commitments show that businesses in Uganda are listening to their customers, who want food that is not only high-quality but also ethically sourced,” said Nabaasa Innocent, Executive Director of the Uganda Vegan Society. “Ngamba Island and Volcano Coffee are setting an inspiring precedent for others to follow.”

These recent commitments build on momentum from previous years. In 2023, Rushaga Gorilla Camp and Golden Tulip Hotel joined the movement by adopting cage-free policies, with Golden Tulip’s pledge also aligning with the global cage-free commitment of the Louvre Hotels Group, its parent company. Additionally, Soola Chick Chicken Farm—a key supplier—transitioned towards more humane production practices, further supporting the shift in Uganda’s food supply chain.

The cage-free movement in Uganda is part of a wider continental and global campaign that seeks to eliminate the use of battery cages for egg-laying hens, replacing them with systems that allow hens to express natural behaviors. International hotel groups like Hilton, Marriott, and Accor have already made cage-free commitments, signaling a strong global trend. Uganda’s hospitality sector is now actively aligning itself with these standards, enhancing both animal welfare and the country’s reputation as a sustainable tourism destination.

Uganda Vegan Society, with support from global partners such as the Open Wing Alliance, has been working to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and support businesses in making this transition. More companies in Uganda are currently in discussions and are showing positive interest in committing to cage-free sourcing in the coming months.

As more businesses adopt humane and sustainable practices, Uganda positions itself as a regional leader in responsible tourism and ethical hospitality—where protecting wildlife and improving the lives of farmed animals go hand in hand.
