Igongo Cultural Centre & Country Hotel Goes 100?ge-Free and Expands Vegan Menu

Mbarara, Uganda — In a significant milestone for animal welfare and ethical hospitality in Uganda, Igongo Cultural Centre & Country Hotel has officially transitioned to 100% cage-free egg sourcing and expanded its vegan menu offerings.

With an annual consumption of over one million eggs, Igongo is among the largest hospitality establishments in Uganda, serving both local and international guests. Its move to eliminate eggs from caged hens represents a major step toward reducing animal suffering within institutional food systems and sets a powerful example for the country’s tourism and hospitality sector.

Beyond its cage-free commitment, the hotel has also increased the availability of vegan dishes, making its menu more inclusive for guests seeking plant-based, cruelty-free dining options.

In its official statement, the hotel noted:

With support from the Uganda Vegan Society, the hotel will continue to strengthen and promote its vegan-friendly offerings, further advancing plant-based culinary innovation while enhancing culinary tourism that integrates Ankole cultural heritage with ethical, sustainable, and animal welfare-conscious dining experiences.”

Leadership Applauds the Commitment

Reacting to the announcement, Nabaasa Innocent, Executive Director of the Uganda Vegan Society, commended Igongo for its leadership in promoting cruelty-free eating.

We sincerely appreciate Igongo Cultural Centre & Country Hotel for championing cruelty-free dining through its transition to cage-free eggs and the expansion of vegan dishes on its menu. This bold step demonstrates that ethical food systems and cultural hospitality can go hand in hand. We believe this commitment will not only strengthen the hotel’s reputation locally but also enhance its global appeal among conscious travelers. We hope more institutions across Uganda will follow Igongo’s example.”

A Model for Ethical Hospitality in Uganda

Igongo’s commitment signals a growing shift within Uganda’s hospitality industry toward responsible sourcing, sustainability, and animal welfare. As consumer awareness increases, institutions that integrate ethical considerations into their food procurement and menu development are likely to gain competitive advantage in both domestic and international markets.

The transition represents more than a procurement change — it reflects a broader transformation in how hospitality can align cultural heritage, tourism, sustainability, and compassion.
