Former Attorney General and Minister Prof. Kiddu Makubuya Passes on Aged 75
Uganda—Renowned legal scholar and former Attorney General Prof. Kiddu Makubuya has passed away at the age of 75, his family has confirmed.
His daughter, Rebecca Nabagala, shared the news but specific details regarding his death remain limited.
Earlier this year, on Martyrs' Day, rumors of Prof. Makubuya's death circulated widely, but were later debunked, revealing instead that he was critically ill and receiving treatment at Nakasero Hospital.
Prof. Kiddu Makubuya's political journey began in 1996 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency. Over the years, he held various high-profile ministerial roles, including State Minister for Luwero Triangle, State Minister of Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), Minister of Education and Sports, and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. From 2005 to 2011, he served as Uganda’s Attorney General, a role in which he played a critical part in shaping the country’s legal landscape.
His last cabinet position was as Minister of General Duties in the Prime Minister’s Office before his resignation in February 2012.
Born on July 30, 1949, Prof. Makubuya was not only a towering figure in Ugandan politics but also a distinguished legal mind.
He graduated with First Class Honors in Law from Makerere University in 1974. His academic excellence propelled him to Yale Law School, where he earned both a Master of Laws degree in 1976 and a Doctor of Juridical Science in 1979.
Throughout his career, Prof. Makubuya was known for his intellectual rigor, dedication to public service, and commitment to justice. His contributions to Uganda's legal system and governance have left an indelible mark, influencing both policy and practice in the country.
