UWA Disburses Shs.3.1B to Communities Surrounding Murchison Falls NP

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has disbursed UGX 3,151,730,162 in revenue-sharing funds to six districts surrounding the Murchison Falls Protected Area. The funds, disbursed on August 8, 2024, underscore the government's commitment to recognizing the vital role local communities play in preserving Uganda's natural heritage.

The disbursement ceremony, held at Nwoya District headquarters, was presided over by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Hon. Tom Butime. He emphasized the importance of these funds in not just supporting conservation efforts, but also in ensuring that the communities living closest to these protected areas benefit directly from conservation activities.

“Today’s disbursement is a testament to the Government’s recognition of the indispensable role that communities play in conserving our wildlife,” Hon. Butime remarked. He further noted that as Uganda's tourism sector continues to recover, these communities can expect even greater financial contributions, fostering both conservation and socio-economic development.

The funds were allocated as follows:

  • Pakwach District: UGX 360,339,273
  • Buliisa District: UGX 810,577,781
  • Masindi District: UGX 297,978,765
  • Kiryandongo District: UGX 746,780,468
  • Oyam District: UGX 220,504,355
  • Nwoya District: UGX 715,549,520

Mr. Raymond Engena, representing the UWA Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude towards the districts and reaffirmed the board’s dedication to ensuring that these communities benefit from conservation efforts. He stressed that conservation is not just about protecting wildlife, but also about improving the livelihoods of those who live alongside these protected areas.

UWA Executive Director, Mr. Sam Mwandha, highlighted the positive impact of previous disbursements, noting that they have significantly improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the recipient communities. He expressed confidence that the current funds would further enhance the quality of life for the people in these districts.

Nwoya District Chairman, Mr. Patrick Okello, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the challenges of living near protected areas while also recognizing the opportunities that these funds provide. He assured that the resources would be used wisely to improve local infrastructure and services.

With the funds now categorized as a conditional grant, District Local Governments are tasked with ensuring efficient and appropriate use of the money, with strict accountability measures in place to prevent mismanagement.
