Africa Vegan Restaurant Week: A Celebration of Plant-Based Cuisines Kicks-Off in Kampala
The highly anticipated Africa Vegan Restaurant Week 2024 was officially launched on Saturday, August 31, 2024, during a vibrant Kampala Vegan Festiv event held at Ark Organics.
The festival was inaugurated by Mrs. Grace Ocheng, Commissioner of Nutrition, Ministry of Health.
In her address, Mrs. Ocheng highlighted the importance of plant-based diets for health, sustainability, and ethical reasons.
"The Africa Vegan Restaurant Week is a crucial step in the right direction for a healthier Uganda. Embracing plant-based eating benefits individual health as well as contributing to individual well-being and the protection of animal rights."
"We encourage all Ugandans to explore the diverse and delicious vegan dish options available," Mrs. Ocheng remarked.
The launch event was a vibrant celebration of plant-based cuisine, featuring an array of activities designed to engage and inspire attendees;
Testing of Vegan Dishes - Local vendors showcased a wide variety of plant-based dishes, offering attendees a taste of the innovative and flavorful options available in vegan cuisine.
Cooking Demonstrations - Professional chefs conducted live cooking demonstrations, sharing their expertise and recipes for creating delicious vegan meals.
Speakers - The event included thought-provoking discussions with nutritionist Coach Purity Wako, these sessions focused on the health benefits of plant-based diets and their role in advancing public health initiatives.
Representatives from different vegan-led organizations led interactive sessions, discussing the impact of plant-based eating on sustainability and ethical food systems.
The launch of Africa Vegan Restaurant Week marks the beginning of a continent-wide celebration, running from September 2-8, 2024.
During this week, restaurants across Uganda and Africa will introduce and highlight vegan menu options, encouraging a shift towards plant-based diets.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about the benefits of plant-based eating for health, the environment, and animal welfare.
The festival is the result of a collaborative effort between vegan advocates, and various organizations dedicated to promoting plant-based living. Participating organizations include:

Nabaasa Innocent, the Executive Director, Uganda Vegan Society and Co-founder Africa Vegan Restaurant Week emphasized the significance of the event, stating;
