ATEI and Partners Launch Innovations to Boost Resilience and Sustainability in Karamoja

ATEI, in collaboration with implementation partners Farm Africa, KAYESE, and UCAA, supported by Care International Uganda conducted a successful sensitization and enrollment event at the Kalimaon Dam site.

This event saw the enrollment of 300 community members committed to implementing innovative solutions aimed at improving water retention and access, strengthening governance, and enhancing food security in the region.

The groups enrolled included water user committees responsible for managing access to and usage of water resources, agro-pastoralists, crop farmers, and reformed cattle rustlers.

The reformed rustlers, in particular, are set to play a pivotal role as tour guides, promoting Kalimoni as an agro-tourism destination, offering them alternative livelihoods.

The event also witnessed the participation of district local government officials, Uganda Wildlife Authority officials, Environment and water experts, and political officers, including the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and the LC5.

The participants, coming from the nine villages of Kapedo, were inducted into core innovations that will drive the region's development.

These innovations include sustainable farming practices led by Farm Africa, climate resilience and water retention strategies spearheaded by KAYESE, and tourism development facilitated by ATEI.

These efforts are designed to bolster the sustainability and resilience of Karamoja communities, ensuring long-term benefits.

Bismac Moses Amumpaire, the Team Leader of ATEI, remarked on the importance of this initiative, stating,

"This event marks a bold step towards building sustainability and resilience in Karamoja."

"We're empowering communities with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive, this will ensure that these communities are equipped to face the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation." He stated.
