Every 7th of February, the world comes together to commemorate the Safer Internet Day. This year’s is celebrated under the theme, “Together for a better internet”.

This day brings communities together to discuss the challenges of navigating the digital world while encouraging people to use technology ethically, politely, critically, and artistically.

The ultimate goal is to raise public awareness of current issues and challenging online issues like cyberbullying, social networking, and digital identity.

The internet has brought about countless benefits, connecting people from all over the world and allowing for the exchange of information and ideas at an unprecedented pace. However, with the increasing use of technology, the need for online privacy has become more pressing.

Unwanted Witness, a civil society organization (CSO) that seeks to create secure uncensored online platforms is calling upon Individuals to ensure safety of their personal data on the web and called for safe and responsible use of the internet.

Semapala Allan Kigozi, the head of programs at Unwanted Witness urged Internet users to be vigilant while browsing on the web and take precautionary measures to safeguard their personal data.

He added that, “By being proactive and informed, we can all help to create a safer and more secure internet for everyone.”

He called upon Governments, the private sector and civil society to play a role in preventing abuse and exploitation online as well as put in place systems that can foster a safe and trusted Internet for all.

“We also call on governments, organizations, and the technology industry to continue their efforts in promoting a safe and trustworthy internet. This includes ensuring the privacy and security of online data, as well as creating awareness around the privacy rights of data subjects.”

“Together, we can make the internet a safer and more reliable place for everyone. Let us all work towards building an Internet we trust.” He noted.

Unwanted Witness has developed campaigns such as ‘Tosilika’ which fights against online violence against women and girls, ‘Beeramu’ a campaign that seeks to safeguard privacy of personal data among others.
