Uganda Police Airwing to Dispose of Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Procure New Helicopter
The Uganda Police Airwing is set to dispose of its fixed-wing aircraft, the PI80 Piaggio Avanti II, and procure a new compatible helicopter.
"This decision follows an evaluation of the performance and cost-effectiveness of the current aircraft, which has failed to deliver positive outcomes since its acquisition in June 2019." Fred Enanga, spokesperson for the Uganda Police Force.
He highlighted the diverse roles of the Airwing, including aerial patrols, search and rescue operations, rapid response, troop transportation, aerial surveillance, and anti-terrorism efforts. Despite its potential, the PI80 Piaggio Avanti II has faced limitations due to its inability to operate on non-tarmacked runways, expensive maintenance, and high cost of spare parts.
"Since its acquisition, the fixed-wing aircraft has only covered a total flying distance of 117 kilometers, falling short of expectations. In light of this, a composite Board of Survey valued the aircraft at USD 4.271 million, considering factors such as depreciated replacement cost valuation, technical condition, and current market prices." Enanga noted.
"The decision to dispose of the unserviceable aircraft and procure a new helicopter received approval from the Honorable Minister, paving the way for the enhancement of the Police Airwing's operational capabilities."
"The replacement aircraft will serve as an additional crime-fighting tool, complementing the existing fleet of helicopters."
"Efforts to identify a suitable replacement have been underway, with careful consideration given to manufacturers and aircraft specifications. The procurement process will adhere to the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets (PPDA) laws and regulations, ensuring transparency and accountability." Enanga added.
