UPDF Female Combatants Commended for Outstanding Performance in International Missions
Female combatants of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) have received commendation for their exemplary performance and dedication while on deployment in international missions.
Colonel Betty Musuya, the Director of Women Affairs in the UPDF, expressed satisfaction with the work of the female peacekeepers during her working visit to Somalia.
She commended them for taking up command roles, combat roles such as piloting combat helicopters, and supportive roles, all of which have contributed positively to the achievements in the mission area.
"I am pleased with your work in the mission area. You have walked the talk and demonstrated your capabilities in various roles. Keep up the good work," said Colonel Musuya.
During her visit, Colonel Musuya toured various Forward Operating Bases in Sector One to assess combat readiness and the experiences and challenges faced by female peacekeepers in a multi-national and foreign mission like ATMIS.
She emphasized the importance of prioritizing trust and open communication within families, while also encouraging a balance between work and family life.
Colonel Musuya cautioned against luxurious or reckless lifestyles and instead recommended prudent financial management for the betterment and development of families. She reiterated the Directorate of Women’s Affairs' commitment to championing the rights of female combatants in the UPDF.
Accompanying Colonel Musuya during her visit were officers and staff from the Directorate of Women Affairs.
