Uganda Gears Up to Mark World Press Freedom Day with Focus on Environmental Crisis

As the world gears up to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, Uganda joins the global community in highlighting the pivotal role of journalism in addressing the pressing environmental crisis.
Under the theme "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis," Uganda media fraternity is rallying together to amplify the urgency of environmental conservation efforts.
The annual observance of World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of press freedom and professional ethics in shaping solutions to global challenges.

In Uganda, this year's commemoration takes on added significance as media professionals and stakeholders unite to address the escalating environmental crisis affecting the country.
The Uganda Media Sector Working Group (UMSWG), alongside state and non-state partners, including the Media Council of Uganda, Uganda Human Rights Commission, and African Centre for Media Excellence, among others, is spearheading efforts to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing Uganda.
From soil degradation and deforestation to water and food insecurity, the nation is grappling with a myriad of environmental issues exacerbated by urbanization and unsustainable economic activities.
In the lead-up to World Press Freedom Day, a series of events and activities will take place across Uganda, including national and regional dialogues, tree planting initiatives, sports galas, and photo exhibitions.
These activities aim to mobilize media freedom advocates and environmental promoters to advocate for better environmental protection policies and practices, as well as increased accountability on environmental and climate change issues.
Highlighting the critical role of journalism in championing environmental causes, the media fraternity will honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the sector during a national dialogue in Kampala.
Additionally, a sustained media campaign will raise awareness on climate, environment, and media-related issues through various platforms.
However, amidst the celebration of press freedom and environmental advocacy, concerns remain about the growing degradation of Uganda's environment and the apparent challenges faced by enforcement institutions in regulating harmful practices.
"The media multi-stakeholder coalition calls upon the government to support press efforts in environmental awareness and enact policies conducive to comprehensive environmental coverage."
